ABOUT BACKYARD BIRD PROJECT

OUR STORY

Backyard Bird Project began as a 12-year-old’s backyard experiment during the stillness of the COVID-19 pandemic — and has since grown into a youth-led conservation movement.

When I adopted my first bird during lockdown, I started noticing the life that fluttered just outside my window: the Carolina Chickadees, Carolina Wrens, and Northern Cardinals that colored the Texas sky. I soon learned that North American bird populations had declined by over 30% in just two decades. The reason was simple — and devastating. Urban expansion, deforestation, and habitat loss were leaving fewer safe places for native birds to nest.

What began as a simple idea — building a few nesting boxes for native Texan birds — turned into a mission to make bird conservation a part of everyday life.

Today, Backyard Bird Project connects youth, families, and seniors across 24 states, empowering over 23,000 people to build nesting boxes and bring bird habitats back to their neighborhoods. Each workshop is more than an event. It’s a chance to reconnect with nature, learn hands-on conservation skills, and experience the joy of seeing new life take flight right in one’s backyard.

MISSION & HISTORY

We believe that protecting wildlife begins at home. Backyard Bird Project’s mission is to inspire communities — especially youth — to take simple, meaningful actions that restore local ecosystems. By teaching people how to build and maintain nesting boxes for native bird species, we help rebuild habitats, encourage biodiversity, and strengthen our connection to the natural world.

Birds are keystone species — they pollinate plants, disperse seeds, and control insects — quietly sustaining the balance of our environment. When we protect them, we protect ourselves, too.

Backyard Bird Project exists to remind every person that conservation doesn’t have to start in distant forests or national parks. It can start right here — in your own backyard.

PARTNERS.

The past five years, we have had the pleasure of working closely a variety of organizations. These partnerships have allowed to grow, learn, and contribute to meaningful projects together. We are grateful for the trust and collaboration we've shared, and we look forward to continuing these relationships in the future. Thank you to all the organizations that have been a part of our journey!
